Lessons Learned

Today I bumped into an old school mate of mine. My first reaction was excitement because I hadn't seen him in a while and my second reaction was curiosity; because I wanted to know what he had done with his life since the last time we saw each other. After the initial awkwardness had passed he started to fill me in on all the things that happened in his life these past five years.

After he had finished filling me in on the events of his life, I caught myself thinking – gosh Darren* has really changed so much over the years and how wrong my first impression of him was. That is when I realised that I was still holding on to the image of him in high school, not taking into consideration that a lot can happen in five years.

It then got me thinking about all the other people who I left behind in high school, how I am still holding on to the image of the last time we meet. I have changed a lot these past five years why should I expect the people I used to know to have stayed exactly the same. Darren * taught me a really tough lesson today – I expect people to get to know the me I am now before they judge me but my first instinct when I meet and old friend or school mate my first reaction is to remember what kind of person he or she was and react according to past knowledge. So God I thank you for putting Darren* in my path today to teach me a valuable lesson.

I’m so proud of how far he has come in life so much so it has given me motivation to re-evaluate, re-align, re-think and re-focus my goal…it’s amazing how one encounter can change your focus in life, ja neh it really is a lesson learned.
